4 Amazing Podcasts That Independent Musicians Need

Being an independent musician is about so much more than writing and performing great songs.  Don’t get me wrong, that’s a HUGE and key part of it all!  But people like us have to navigate some rough waters in the business world too.  Great marketing and business skills can mean the difference between getting heard and getting swallowed up into obscurity.  That’s where these podcasts come in.

Over the last few months, I’ve discovered some great podcasts that I think are invaluable resources for musicians and songwriters who want to take their business to the next level.  These podcasts cover a variety of relevant topics for independent musicians: music industry news and tips, business and marketing advice, and general leadership and entrepreneurial strategies.

These podcasts have personally been great sources of information and encouragement to me, and I’m confident you will find them helpful too.  So here they are in no particular order . . .

1.  This is Your Life—by Michael Hyatt

This 20-30 minute weekly podcast focuses on empowering individuals to start their own business, achieve their goals, and grow as a person.  Michael methodically outlines easy-to-apply steps in order to create the change from within in order to lead a stronger, happier, and more productive life.  I appreciate his organization and focus in the podcasts (instead of rambling on about things).  This podcast is a great encouragement tool for independent musicians who sometimes need non-musical inspiration to put ideas into action.

Some of my favorite episodes are:

  • Becoming More Productive by Reengineering Your Morning Ritual
  • 10 Ways to Generate More Blog Traffic
  • The Relationship Between Vision and Productivity

2.  DIY Musician Podcast—by CD Baby

This podcast comes out sporadically (sometimes a few times a month and sometimes every couple months), but it delivers interesting content in a “roundtable” conversational way with a few different perspectives chiming in each episode.  They discuss new changes in online music streaming or social media and suggest how independent musicians can best develop a fan base and get heard.  I like the variety of perspectives on the show and the variety of music industry guests.  This podcast is a great way for independent musicians to keep track of the latest changes in the music industry—everything from new streaming services to legal intellectual property issues.

Some of my favorite episodes are:

  • Brian Thompson—Get Your Music Heard
  • Roundtable—The Pandora Problem
  • Paul Anthony—How to License Music for TV, Film, YouTube and Beyond

3.  The Ray Edwards Show Podcast—by Ray Edwards

This weekly podcast runs anywhere from 20-45 minutes and covers a wide range of topics in growing your business.  Some of the episodes deal more with personal leadership development and others focus more on technical marketing tools to make better use of virtual business.  Ray’s shows have an honest, encouraging tone and include personal stories of his own successes and failures to help illustrate his points.  This podcast is great for independent musicians to develop as a leader of their own music business and to utilize all the online marketing tools in order to bring more people to your music.

Some of my favorite episodes are:

  • How to Set Up Your Online Empire in 7 Days
  • How to Turn Setbacks into Comebacks
  • 5 Ways Discipline Will Make You Rich

4.  Social Media Marketing Podcast with Michael Stelzner—by Social Media Examiner

This podcast gives great advice on how to effectively use each of the different types of social media outlets—particularly focusing on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Blogs, and E-mail—in order to grow your audience and market your products.  I like that the show’s format varies from informal interviews to step-by-step walk-throughs of different ways to utilize each social platform in ways that will more effectively engage your audience (or fans).  This is a great podcast for getting down to the nitty-gritty marketing details necessary in this internet age.

Some of my favorite episodes are:

  • Social Strategy: How to Build a Sustainable Social Media Marketing Plan
  • Overcoming Fear: How to Break Through and Get Stuff Done
  • New Facebook Features: What Marketers Need to Know

Do you have any podcast recommendations?  I’d love to hear about what you’re listening to for advice!
